Hawai'i Farm to School Gardening Program Needs Kitchen Supplies!

My students need mixing bowls, measuring cups, kid safe knives, reusable forks, cutting boards, a toaster oven and a wagon to transport supplies to maximize our Farm to School Gardening Program's potential!

My Students

My scholars are a diverse and enthusiastic group of elementary students that live in a rural community in Hawai'i. Our limited school funds only allow for encore classes, such as Music, Art, Hawaiiana and Gardening twice a month.

Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources available to them for enrichment and enjoyment outside of school.

It is for this reason that their time in these classes are so important and that their experiences be the best they can possibly be. Our scholars' love and enjoyment of these encore classes are evident in their participation and engagement.

My Project

During our Farm to School program, our scholars are able to gain a better understanding of the food system and where our food comes from. Students have successfully been able to plant gardens in raised beds and meet local farmers to try produce that was grown only a few miles away. During our twice a month Gardening Class, this year alone my students have been able to make salad dressing from local ingredients, cut lettuce that was grown at a local farm and try sugar cane. I have seen some scholars who refused to eat any salad during lunch enthusiastically eat a salad they helped prepare. This is an incredible program that is impacting our scholars healthy eating choices and encourages them to try new things.

This Gardening Program has not been unable to reach it's full potential due to limited funds for supplies such as mixing bowls, measuring cups, cutting boards and child safe knives.

This project is aimed at increasing the impact that this Gardening Program has made by providing the supplies necessary to insure that every child is able to participate in the preparing of healthy food. We currently only have a few mixing bowls and cooking supplies to share during our twice a month class. By donating to this project, our Gardening Teacher will have the supplies necessary to make it possible for all students to participate in the class every time. Donations will also fund a toaster oven which will be used to create more complex dishes to be created and eaten during class. The possibilities are endless when you have the tools to get you there!
