Having No Pencil Is Pointless

My students need writing utensils! It's amazing how many students are simply unable to provide or maintain a pencil and without a writing utensil, being successful in school is incredibly difficult! I need your help!

My Students

As a middle school teacher in an urban setting, I see a wide range of students entering my classroom, all at varying levels and with a wide range of ability and interest. My students come from different backgrounds of experiences with science, too. Some students have parents who are engineers and scientists, or deal daily with science in their professions, and some who have no real experiences with it at all. And then, there's me! I try to bridge the gaps as best I can to keep my students all moving and learning as much as they can, while bringing in as many hands-on opportunities into the classroom as I can.

Science is wonderful because you're able to bring so many hands-on experiences into the classroom.

Kids are excited about science and look forward to coming to my classroom. They know that outside our school walls, life can be really challenging. We try to fill them with skills and strategies to improve their situations. That's why we are in this occupation.

My Project

Each day, I expect my student to come ready to learn, but there are too many who literally do not have a pencil to write with. I am asking for pencils (both mechanical and traditional) to stock a pencil borrowing station, where students leave collateral items in exchange for use of writing utencils until they return the pencils. I believe that this cuts down the number of pencils needed and teaches students that they have to be responsible for returning the borrowed items. This stretches the materials out longer and keeps students accountable, which I believe is important. I don't want to foster an environment where students are led to become entitled and expect someone else to continually 'give' them a new pencil each day. Last year, I purchased 300 pencils and was able to make that last the entire school year. I anticipate that same success this year.

We wouldn't expect a car to drive without tires, and expecting students to learn without pencils seems almost entirely unrealistic.

I need your help to get the writing utencils into the classroom ready for student usage, as this year I had to replace my pencil sharpeners after lots of years of heavy use. Please help me create a space where students are ready to learn! Thank you for your consideration!
