My Students
I teach in a school where the student population is linguistically and culturally diverse, and which services a community with families from all over the world. I see the exciting possibilities that I can make available to my students who need opportunities to explore creative and critical thinking through the arts.
I find that using the arts is such an exciting and engaging way to channel their abilities, and to reach those learners who may have difficulties with reading and language or grasping math concepts.
I am often touched by the level of care and kindness with which all my students help each other in our quest to learn. It comes as no surprise that these children absolutely love the arts. When I introduce a painting project or play music for them on the piano, I can see their heightened interest and excitement.
My Project
The second grade students at my school need shirts so that we look awesome for fieldtrip excursions, group pictures, and any school performances. Making tie-dye shirts would be a wonderfully engaging and beautiful opportunity for children to learn the step-by-step process of tie-dye and the science concept of mixing colors. They would also practice creativity and problem solving skills while experimenting with various ways of placing their rubber bands on their shirts and folding them to make unique and inspired designs.
Tie-dying has a definite "wow factor" when it comes to learning about colors and carefully following directions, which makes it a powerful and memorable learning experience.
I plan to integrate this project with literature and writing as well, using books by Leo Lionni and Eric Carle to enhance the activity, and teaching my students how to write clear "how to" instructions on how to make a tie-dye shirt.
