This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When kids come in, they are excited about Science! Hands on materials make Science come alive for our students.
"Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school" Einstein
My students are hard workers from low-income areas.
We have a high English Language Learner population and a very high percentage of free lunch students. Although we live in one of the most naturally diverse areas of the country, most of my students have not traveled much farther than a couple hours from where they were born.
My Project
With these "Soil Layers Lab kits" to examine the earth, compasses for finding the radius and construction paper, markers and pencils for recording all kinds of projects! students will be using higher order thinking skills (NGSS and Common Core) to design and implement soil tests. Like real engineers, they will use the materials to develop their investigative skills to solve real world issues. I want my students to understand how they are connected to the earth.
Students will be able to see the three main types of soil making up earth's crust.
They will also learn how water moves through soil depending on what percentages of materials are present.
Lastly, students will be able to bring in their own samples to test. This will really bring home the connection between them and their environment.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
