it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In our school we serve a unique and multicultural population with different needs. I am a bilingual SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist) who works with children from kindergarten through fifth grade who present a range of deficits, especially in reading and literacy.
Unfortunately, many of my students have difficulty understanding the grade-level texts as they present with deficits in phonological as well as phonemic awareness skills, vocabulary, grammar structure of language and reading comprehension which are essential skills for reading proficiency.
A Literacy Based intervention will help improve reading skills in our children.
My Project
Speech-language pathologists play an important role in ensuring that all children gain access to appropriate instruction in reading, writing, and spelling in both special education and regular education settings. Recent research indicates that children with language disorder are at risk of developing reading problems due to poor phonological processing ability, inadequate semantic word and world knowledge, and impaired oral and reading comprehension skills. Our students need interactive and fun materials to develop a program to improve academic skills especially in reading. I have requested materials to improve my student’s literacy skills such as: magnetic boards, beginning sound and vowel games, sight word game, phonological awareness kit, word building stakers, and listening and attention activities.
