This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing 2nd-grade bilingual learners ready to take on the world! Most of them are English Language Learners and their families come from countries around the world, living the American Dream. The rest of the students are native English speakers learning Spanish, becoming empowered and compassionate citizens by living and learning in another language, culture, and perspective.

Many of my students struggle with issues of poverty and access to academic experiences and the arts.

Fortunately, bilingual education is one of the best ways to close the opportunity gap and to break down barriers of racism and socioeconomic differences. Actually, if a student is allowed to learn in their native language, they acquire English at a better and faster rate than those who do not. And they also have bilingual skills to share with the world to learn about other cultures and perspectives!

Unfortunately, I do not have sufficient materials in Spanish to help support their learning. This is why I need your help! Any donations will directly affect over 40 students, as I teach 2 classrooms of students a day (they rotate with an English teacher). I will also use them for years and years to come!

My Project

This time of remote learning and Covid 19 has hit many of my students and their families hard, especially our immigrant families. Please help me to spread some cheer this winter and to help my students to have fun while learning at home. Every year we learn about marine animals and how we can learn to protect them by researching and writing a book about them to share with others. I want to motivate and excite my bilingual learners about this theme as well as inspire them to have fun learning at home about the animal they chose to research. With these engaging bilingual books about marine animals, they can actually read a real book at home instead of all day on the screen and also share them with their families and siblings. With the fun marine animal bags I can leave them at their door safely and they can have something exciting to open as well as decorate. The ocean and marine animal games will help keep the project fun but also a learning tool to pass all the time at home with their families. With the blank notebooks, they will be able to write their own book about marine animals and how to protect them that we will share with their classmates online. The math and Spanish workbooks and games will also keep learning fun at home with their siblings and have something to write on instead of always on the computer. The marine animal toys and stuffed animals will be a fun mascot to show to us online (I have a stuffed salmon that I have to talk to them on the computer) and a great prop for them to write their fictional story about their marine animal to accompany their non-fiction book.
