Do you remember a time when someone read to you as a child? Unfortunately, many of the students in my classroom are missing that "lap time" and the experience of being read to by a parent or grandparent. We need CD and tape read alongs to help us make up that lost reading time in the classroom.
My students come from an economically disadvantaged area in Ohio.
Most of my students come from struggling one-parent families. Because of their unfortunate home circumstances and lack of preschool, my students walk into kindergarten 1-2 years behind typical kindergarten students. Most of my students are not read to regularly, have never been to a library and do not own a book. They are missing a crucial part of their childhoods, listening to stories being read to them. My students need experiences with books. They need to hear fairy tales, non-fiction texts and classic children's stories. We can make up for these lost experiences by "Listening to Reading" and giving these children a chance to listen to classic children's stories so that they may fall in love with reading, too. Although we can borrow a few books from the public library, we need a greater number and variety of books on tape to use in our classroom.
The resources that I am requesting include books on CD and tape of classic children books, non-fiction texts about animals, and popular fairy tales. These listening sets will be used in the classroom to listen to books on CD. Thanks to the generous donors at Donors Choose, our class has been funded for 6 sets of CD players and 6 tape cassette players with headphones to use when we are listening to these amazing books. Students who choose to listen to reading in the classroom will be able to take a CD player and comfy pillow and escape into a good book during our independent practice. They can hear fluent readers use expression while sharing in classic children's stories. Although we can never replace the experience of nightly bedtime stories being read to these children, we can help them become better readers by giving them the opportunity to hear fluent reading and high quality texts.
The children in my classroom are not read to regularly and they are missing this crucial listening time.
To help them become fluent readers and experience quality literature, they need the chance to sit and listen to books in the classroom. By listening to books, they will gain knowledge of words, how to use and navigate text and hear quality literature in the classroom. Please consider donating to our classroom to give the students in my class every advantage in their educational careers.
