My Project

This past year I tried something very scary: a desk-free classroom. I scoured yard sales, begged for donations and even took some side-of-the-road gems. I got a lot of sideways glances and quite a few naysayers, but it was a huge success. It's time to replace the old with some things more durable.

I want the kids to have some control in their learning and this was the first step.

When they enter my class during the first few days of school they get to try out all types of seating: floor, chairs, pub height tables, bean bags, bouncy seats, you name it. After they've tried them all they get to choose the seating that fits their personality and learning style best. In cases where the kids argue over a particular piece of furniture (the bean bags!) I rotate their seats. The experiment was just that at first, but it made such an absolutely enormous difference in how I teach and how the kids learn. They're comfortable, alert, and most of all they feel heard! They feel seen. They feel like the classroom is truly their space.

I want to continue with this setup, but a lot of my furniture is 3rd or 4th hand. I want to get some new items in the room that aren't falling apart and don't look so worn. This project will give my students next fall a fresh start.
