This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach First Grade at a Charter School in a very low income district in New York. My students work very hard and deserve every advantage we can give them.
Our classroom has a serious seating shortage. Ever time we switch activities, students are forced to drag chairs around the room from one table to another because we don't have enough chairs to go around each table. This causes a lot of unnecessary collisions and injuries to these little First Graders.
If we had just six more chairs in our classroom, we could have enough chairs at each table so that students would be able to just stand up and walk themselves to their next group without having to carry their chairs along with them. This would save so much time and prevent so many accidents!
Our students would also benefit from having some bean-bag chairs in our library to create a calm and comfortable reading spot.
With your help, these First Graders will go through their days without having to play any unpleasant games of "musical chairs." With enough chairs in our classroom, we will have peaceful transitions and happy students! And with some bean-bags in our library, we will have many comfortable readers, too.
