Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need activities that will entertain and challenge them during choice time. I teach an amazing class of twenty-five, first graders in the South Bronx.

Many of my students are English language learners and children with special needs.

Most qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my students are creative, thoughtful and eager learners, and much of their knowledge this year has been expressed through their play and self-exploration. It has been so exciting to see them fully engaged each day as they learn through collaboration and inquiry with their peers.

My Project

Research about environmental design has revealed the positive effect that comfort can have on learning, human productivity, and creativity. We want to raise creative and highly productive students. Even in first grade, many of my students are required to sit for prolonged periods of time, especially during reading group. Learning to read can cause a lot of anxiety for a young student, and sitting uncomfortably shouldn't be something my students should have to worry about! I want them to be comfortable in their space so they can be more engaged and thoughtful. Reading should be fun and relaxing, and these chairs will get us there!

These chairs we are requesting will help make our students more comfortable, more productive, more focused, and will also make reading groups a more exciting activity to participate in.

Who wouldn't want to do some reading in the cool new classroom chairs? My students will thank you!

I am also requesting a swivel chair to use for when students are sharing in the teacher chair and a speck case to use with our ipad. We use our ipad every day to watch videos during break and snack time and the case will help us prop the ipad and keep it still for learning. It will help us immensely!
