Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember what it felt like when you read a book all by yourself for the first time? My students are working through that process of being able to truly read a book and understand what it is about. The problem, we don't have a enough books that they can read on their own.
I teach third grade at a Title I school in the city.
My students are really anxious to learn to read and love to have books in their hand. They are constantly looking for a new book to get their hands on. My boys are interested in everything sports and robot related. My girls have fallen in love with Cam Jansen and Judy Moody. All of them are very artistic and love to draw.
My Project
We have adopted a guided reading program to help meet students at their levels and move them through to successful, independent readers. Third graders should come into my classroom reading at a Level L or M. However, this year we are much further behind. My students are all on an A to C level, which is Kindergarten level. We are working strongly to move them through. Because we were not prepared to have students on this level, the school does not have books for these children. I need the leveled books so they can work on their own and find some success.
In order for my students to practice their skills, they need to interact with text on a level they can truly read.
These leveled books will give students the opportunity to practice and hopefully, learn to read. As soon as we can open the door to independent reading, I am sure my students will take off.
