Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th grade Language Arts in an inner city school. My three classes are composed of students who are low level readers. By the time they enter our classroom, most of them are reading 2 to 3 years below grade level. With such limited success early in their academic careers, it is not surprising that most of them hate to read. My goal is to introduce students to quality literature that they want to read. This year we have had success reading Sharon Draper novels. Since the beginning of the year we have read two of her novels: Double Dutch and Romiette and Julio. Their enthusiasm for both these novels blew me away. I heard them talking about the books with one another, to their friends and to other staff members at school. They begged to read "just one more chapter." Two students who wouldn't complete a level 3 picture book at the beginning of the year actually read the end of Double Dutch before the rest of us because they couldn't wait. Since the beginning of the year, their reading levels have increased and their interest in reading has soared. We would love to have a class set of Sharon Draper's award winning book, The Battle of Jericho, for our classroom. Thank you.
