Hatching Up Learning

My students need real-world activities, such as an incubation and hatching study, to support their learning of the world around them.

My Students

My students come from a low-income neighborhood and face struggles and challenges on a daily basis. Included in their daily challenges are often times financial struggles. All of my students receive a free breakfast and lunch every school day. My goal is to make the classroom a fun and welcoming environment where they can learn and grow regardless of what goes on outside of school. Even with what these kids face on a daily basis, they come to school with a positive outlook and a love for learning!

With the income restrictions placed on the families that I serve, many of my students do not have access to supplies to help them thrive.

My kids love to play, read, move, and everything else that your average kindergartner does in a day. I cannot control what goes on outside of my classroom, but I take pride in what goes on inside of it. I want to make sure that my students strive and that they have what they need to be successful and continue their love of learning.

My Project

My students enjoy hands on activities and real-life projects to enhance their learning. One of my favorite activities as a student myself was the opportunity to incubate and hatch chicks in my classroom. I would love to give this opportunity to my students as well. While the eggs are incubating, students learn about the growth of the animals. We will have the opportunity to candle the eggs at different times during the incubation period. With this, students can see inside of the egg at the current growth of the chick inside.

After the chicks hatch, students will have the opportunity and responsibility to learn to care for the young animals before they go to a local farm.

Once the chicks hatch, students will learn that we need to care for the chicks as we watch them quickly grow and develop. This incubator will be the first place for my students to watch this happen. This will be the first home for the chicks. The incubator that I have selected has a huge window for the students to observe the eggs as they are hatching. It also has a countdown until hatching timer on the top to allow the students to get more excited as the time nears. This is a wonderful opportunity, and I am hopeful that we will have this project funded and I can start the activity soon.
