Help me give my students a first hand experience raising chickens. We are in need of supplies to incubate eggs through their cycle, then hatch and observe chicks throughout their first days of life.
These materials will turn 4th graders into farmers. Students into scientists. The incubator will allow us to observe the stages of hatching an egg including growth from embryo to chick. Next we will observe the hatching process. The brooder, food and water bottles, and shavings will allow us to observe and interact with our chicks during their first few weeks of life.
Our sustainability scientists will learn first hand about the life cycle of chickens.
In order to protect and improve our planet we need to teach the next generation about sustainable living, including food sourcing and biology. Learning first hand about chickens will not only give us greater knowledge about sustainability but it will also allow us to understand the life cycle of birds through personal experience. This may spark an interest in STEM continuing throughout school and beyond.
Our students are not only curious and kind, they are also in need. These students come from diverse neighborhoods and cultures, speak multiple languages, use multiple intelligences to access learning, have varied special needs, and come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. Every child deserves the chance to better their world and learn through experience. Our students attend school in an urban setting and may not have exposure to this experience in their own day to day life. This is an incredible opportunity for deeper learning.
