My Project

My goal as a language instructor has evolved throughout my teaching career. When I first began 16 years ago I thought the only way to learn a language was to study vocabulary, fill out verb charts, and complete exercises in a textbook. After a few years of fighting an uphill battle to engage my students, I was introduced to the method of teaching known as comprehensible input. When I focused on providing my students with authentic, comprehensible materials and activities in the target language, their interest and performance improved dramatically.

Immersing students in the target language by focusing on topics that interest them is one of the best ways to hook students.

They are interested in being able to communicate in the language, not fill out a verb chart. Unfortunately, traditional textbooks only provide minimal engaging, authentic experiences for students to interact with the target language. The goal of this project is to purchase more resources outside of the adopted textbook series that will allow me to utilize a wider variety of resources for my students to interact with.

When I shifted from language drills to language experiences, my students came alive! Having the funds to purchase more authentic resources will help me to continue engaging my students in a way in which they can apply language skills outside of the classroom.
