Many students lost their homes, cars and all belongings to four feet of rising water from Hurricane Harvey. This included their school materials that were purchased two weeks prior, hemos, cars, computers, phones, etc.
Hurricane Harvey devastated our community.
The students are AP Statistics and AP Calculus students who are Seniors in the top echelon of the school. They are all college bound so the effects of the flooding hit these students at a time when they should be concentrating on preparing for college and finishing their senior year in a positive way.
My Project
After Hurricane Harvey’s 4 feet of water receded from homes in September, many of our students lost everything...including school materials. Providing our AP Statistics students with TI Nspire calculators will allow them to prepare for the upcoming AP exam.
Currently, students who lost a calculator because of Harvey’s distruction are unable to complete homework assignments.
(Many of the calculations and statistical testing are dependent on the use of a calculator.) A class set of 30 calculators has been provided from our district, however, I cannot check those calculators out for homework. The class set has to be available to the other 5 other math classes I teach.
The students will be better prepared for the AP exam since they will have the calculator and be able to complete assignments. With the calculators, the students are on a level playing field with their peers around the country.
