Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third grade class - high-poverty ESOL children far below reading level are improving their reading and social skills through a cross-curricular Harry Potter theme. They are organized into "houses" like Harry Potter and are awarded points for acts of kindness, responsibility and thinking outside of the box (but not grades). They are spellbound as I read the first novel to them - they're learning about making the right choices, igniting their imagination and friendship along with reading. One or two have copies and their friends huddle around them, reading along. I would love to give them each a copy of the next book, so they could all read along, improving their skills even more.
Our school is big on drive-bys and gangs, little on kids who own books or parents who read to them. We have almost no money and I've spent hundreds of my own in order to get them the basics. These children are good kids who are going to have to fight to have a good future. The moral lessons of Harry Potter are as important to them as improving their reading (they are all so far behind).
If all of our students can get a copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, they can become more fully engaged in reading - they are entranced by the story - and will be able to discuss the difficult choices Harry and his friend makes in order to live fulfilling and honorable lives.
With your help, these students will be able to revel in the magic of reading. Because of you, their sense of competence will increase along with their reading skills. Thanks so much for your consideration.
