My students need 24 copies of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" so we can continue our miraculous adventure in reading. In our high-crime, high-poverty neighborhood, Harry has motivated my all-ESOL classroom more than any other reading source. His story has truly had a magical effect on my students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 3rd grade ESOL students in a sheltered classroom where drive-by's are common and high school graduates are not. These children have been spellbound as I read the Harry Potter series aloud to them. We are moving through the second book - a generous donor sent us a class set so the kids wouldn't have to huddle over the two or three copies we had. Their reading is improving - as is their joy of reading. I hope to continue their adventure by continuing with the third book.
Our school has little funding, high poverty, low literacy. It is often the safest place in these children's lives.
I have seen kids' reading levels jump tremendously as they learn through shared reading of the second Harry Potter book. If we can start the third novel together, they will hold onto the momentum through the end of the school year.
You will literally be doing magic - transforming under confident, below-level readers with enthused students who learn important moral lessons about making the right choices, friendship and the importance of education as they learn to read. I see it happening before my eyes, but we'll come to a screeching halt when we finish the second book if we can't open up the third volume immediately after closing the second.
