I have been teaching French at KAPPA II (Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy) since 2002. Our public school has one objective in mind: to foster an academically accelerated program to Harlem youth. Our school offers a ?private school? setting for students who cannot afford a private education. We offer a tough curriculum: our school starts at 7:30 am and ends at 4 pm with mandatory Music, Technology and French lessons. Students often ask me, ?Why should I learn French?? I teach them that learning a new language can open doors: a second language can get them that dream job; a second language can get them to any college; a second language can make them look ?cool!? The latter seems to work best! There are times I look at my students and think, ?They are disadvantaged compared to students from other communities.? Many come from broken homes where education is not valued. Some truly believe that they will grow-up to be basketball players or the next American Idol. This is the world they know. I realized that by teaching French in this rigorous academic setting, I can open and expand their eyes towards new perspectives. Today, my Eighth Graders are ready to apply for competitive high schools! I have targeted 13 students who now speak, write and comprehend French after three years with me! The project I am embarking on is to take these 13 students to France. I truly want them to experience the language and its culture outside of the classroom. We work with textbooks, audio cassettes, novels and posters of the famous French sites. However, I want them to have the total experience: for many of them, riding an airplane is nothing they have experienced in their thirteen years! Going to France and seeing the sites they read about in posters and books is unimaginable! With the help of a traveling agency called Explorica, I am able to book a trip for my students in April 2006. This cost covers air fare, hotel, meals and tour fees. It truly is a great deal! The deadline for funding according to the representatives at Explorica, is January 9, 2006. My students come from poor families and I am determined to find sponsors to make this trip a reality for them! I want to give them this France connection! I want them to discover the world outside of Harlem! Help me open their worlds!
