Hardworking Students Deserve to be Recognized and Rewarded!
Help me give my students rewards for doing extra math work independently. Students earn 1000 points by answering problems correctly or playing math games on Mathletics. With a bronze certificate with on the orange cardstock, they earn prizes.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are eager to learn. I have a high Hispanic population and many ESL students. Probably a little more than 50% of my students do not speak English at home. Even with the half of them being ESL and 98% being eligible for free lunch, they have big dreams. I teach math and they know I love math and I want to pass that love along to them.
They know that they can and will learn math and that there are many careers that involve math in the future.
I like to have speakers come in and discuss their careers and how they use math and science in their daily jobs. Also, we start the year with research projects on careers in mathematics. If they are having trouble, I tutor at lunch and recess three days a week and the classroom is always packed (especially when it's to cold to go outside). There is no embarrassment, just everyone wanting to succeed. Student council also helps out with tutoring during that time and once a week after school.
My Project
When students earn 1000 points by playing math fluency games or completing optional or teacher assigned math lessons, they earn a bronze certificate on the orange card stock. The lessons are at their ability and grade level so they can be successful and challenged.
Every Monday, all bronze certificate winners are presented a certificate in front of their classmates that says how many points they earned and they get to choose a prize from the prize box.
When they receive 5 bronze certificates, they earn a silver certificate and they get their picture taken with the principal and posted in the main hallway. They love the learning and the recognition and it encourages more independent practice.
