Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As of December 2019, our school is one of six preK-8 schools in Camden City Schools. Our preK-8 School enrolled 349 students from prekindergarten to eighth grade. Of that number, 90.6% (314) students were categorized as economically disadvantaged. 21% (73) students were classified disabled and 7.7% (27) students were EL. 59.9% (209) of the students at Sunny preK-8 School are Hispanic, 33.2% (116) are African American, and 5.7% (20) are Asian.

Students in grades 6-8 are dynamic and fabulous.

They are always willing to learn and they show the enjoyment for learning by their level of excitement in the classroom. Students vie to be the one with the correct answer for math.

My Project

My students always come in with a smile. They are eager to participate in our small math groups because they know that they will get much needed and deserved attention. Unfortunately, some of them don't have someone to read to them or with them at home. Some do, but others have parents that do not speak English and cannot help. Others are raised by family members other than their parents, and often are just too busy to help. All of my students receive a free breakfast at school each morning and free lunch everyday. They are appreciative of the fun things we do in class and love to share with us the things they do outside of class. Our school is old but very clean and always decorated with the work of the students. Their art work lines the hallways and their classwork is outside all the classrooms. Our school may be in the city and we may hear sirens throughout the day, but within our classes, we hear laughter. The students love to learn and enjoy coming to school each day.

Ours is a beautiful school, but it is a very old building.

We have classrooms on all three floors with no air conditioning. Some days, the heat is so unbearable, the District is forced to closed down and send students home early.
