"Where we start is not where we will finish," is the perfect statement to describe my students. They are often thought of as trouble-makers; however, my students are bright and want to learn. We work hard to dispel that stereotype.
The students in my class are economically challenged.
Despite this set back, I have seen some students come in below grade-level and leave scholars. However, it took a lot of work on their part. My school is in an inner city neighborhood and there are many who believe the only way out is through sports but I say NO.
My Project
There are so many students that do not get an opportunity to eat breakfast. As a result, my students end up eating foods full of salt, sugar, and empty calories. The lack of proper nourishment in the morning has a ripple effect on their productivity for the remainder of the day. These students have sugar crashes where they want to sleep or they have headaches and stomachaches from not eating for hours.
Every student deserves to come to school feeling clean and neat.
As freshmen my students are still perfecting the art of personal hygiene. There are plenty of commercials about how body odor and the embarrassment it causes. That embarrassment is heightened for a child in the confined classroom environment. Students are in need of strong deodorant, soap, and lotion to combat their un-fresh odor. My students need these supplies so that they do not feel ashamed to come to class because they do not feel fresh and ready to learn.
