My Students
Our school is a diverse community of learners and educators, and we are stronger for it. Our students come from all over Oakland, and they bring a variety of languages, experience, and history with them to our gorgeous 40-acre campus.
We are a Title I school, but despite the lack of funding, we have a robust academic community.
Our students often have many obstacles to navigate, from long commutes, housing insecurity, and institutional disparity, yet they thrive when given the opportunity.
This year we are piloting our new Honors English course for 10th-grade students. We encouraged all interested students to apply, and the 120 students who selected it are an incredible and diverse set of scholars.
My Project
This year we introduced the new Skyline Honors English course. It was open to all rising 10th graders, and we encouraged students to sign up for this exciting and challenging new class.120 determined sophomores, who represent the diversity of the Skyline community, selected the course.
With the amount of screen time students are getting on a normal day, let alone during distance learning, it is imperative that they have hard copies of their texts.
Critical reading and annotation are more robust with physical texts and crucial for our course. By providing these books to our students to engage at home they will be able to hone critical skills and reduce the amount of time spent reading PDFs on their various screens.
