For first graders, science is all about hands-on activities. Properties of matter is one of the topics that we learn about. This is a hard topic for students to understand.
The majority of my students come from military homes.
Being so young, this can be very difficult for them to deal with because they are constantly having a parent deploy. Our school has many students that qualify for free or reduced lunch and breakfast.
My Project
These resources will provide my first graders with activities to explore the different properties of matter. The books and activity kit are going to give my students a better understanding of the characteristics of a solid, a liquid, and a gas. Properties of matter is a difficult concept for my students to understand. It is difficult to explain to them that heat or cold can change the appearance of an item. My students will be able to see how an item can start as a solid, transform into a liquid, and then back into a solid. We will be able to read the properties of matter books to give us some background knowledge prior to completing our experiments.
Science is a subject that is taught best with hands-on activities.
First grade is all about getting up close and interacting with science. I want to give my students the opportunity to see that science is fun!
