My Students
I teach a wonderful group of students in a high poverty neighborhood. The children I teach have the same drive to learn as students in more affluent neighborhoods.
I have been teaching in this same neighborhood for twelve years and for the past ten years, I have seen parents struggle to buy basic supplies for their children.
They often have to choose whether to buy school supplies or food. Needless to say, the parents chose to buy food. A lack of supplies can really hurt a student's self-esteem, which then affects their learning.
My Project
The students of P. S. 53 come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Aside from their school the unifying factor is their social economic status. A high percentage of the students are in transitional housing and simple toiletries such as: soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes are difficult for the parents to attain because of their socioeconomic status.
Negative effects on health, attendance, and concentration can hinder a student’s ability to perform successfully and has a negative impact on their self confidence as well.
Help the students of P. S. 53 to do their best by providing them with some of their basic toiletries.
