My students need tools to keep organized during our reading time. Book boxes keep books of their choice at their fingertips. Pointers will be used to practice fluency.
I believe that second grade is the year that I learned the love of reading. I hope to share this love with my students. I know that being organized is a challenge, but if the students have the needed materials they will get into a routine and spend as much time as possible reading!
I am so excited to meet my new second graders.
I have spent the last ten years working in third and fourth grade. This year, I will be teaching second grade for the first time! I have spent lots of time this summer getting ready! Our classroom will have a camping theme and we will be known as "The Happy Campers!" Ellisville Elementary is a wonderful place to work and attend school! The students work so hard and get excited about learning!
My Project
I have spent a lot of time this summer researching the benefits of book boxes. I plan to use the Daily Five program so that my students spend every minute of the reading block reading and working on different strategies. The book boxes will be a place where students keep resources that they are reading. I will teach them how to choose books on their level as well as introduce them to many different authors and genres. My hope is that during reading time, the students will be so excited to read anything that they have chosen to keep in their box. I strongly believe that this will help create a sense of ownership and excitement for reading.
The other reading tools will help while teaching small groups of five or six students. They will help guide the students when working on fluency, reading comprehension, and story elements.
I know the students will be as excited as I am to use the new resources!
I can envision students filling their boxes with books that they can't wait to read! I believe that this will help create a love of reading!
