This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Chemistry is the science of materials, their properties, and how they react with each other. Why do some atoms combine with each other while other atoms do not? Because atoms just want to be happy! Of course, atoms don’t really have feelings, but they do have observable behaviors.
An overall goal of this project is for my students to understand that atoms tend to be more stable, or “happy,” when they have certain numbers of electrons whizzing around their cores.
Other goals for this project are for all students to learn that matter is made up of one or more atoms, calculate atomic mass, and atomic number. The Atoms, Electrons and Energy Kit will help my students to understand the atoms and atomic structure by assembling the model.
If I could describe my classroom, the words would be: unique in their own way, authentic, rigorous, supportive, engaging, and community. Students in my class have ownership of their own learning and a lot of what goes on happens organically. Because of the passion I have for creating future engineers, chemists, and general scientists, my class is definitely engaging.
