Handwriting Without Tears

Help me give my students handwriting practice and unifix cubes so I can help them bridge the gaps in their learning from being online during the pandemic.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students were in Kindergarten during the 2020-2021 school year. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, they were learning online through tablets the entire year. Because of this they missed out on some core kindergarten learning that can only happen in the classroom.

I have noticed the vast majority of my class does not know how to form print letters correctly.

They try their best to make the letter shapes, but they have not learned the pencil strokes that allow for readable and efficient writing. I would like to start teaching them letter formations, one letter a day for a month and then give them time to independently practice tracing and copying letters. I know this may feel like a boring task for them, so I want them to each have their own book (which they love!) and be able to take ownership and work at their own pace. I found some copies of the renowned and research based program Handwriting without Tears in my classroom and I am looking to complete the set with the appropriate levels for where some of my students are.

Additionally, I have a few students are still really struggling conceptually with counting and place value. Because we are a 2nd grade class where most students are now doing math at the pictorial level, I don't have a good set of unifix cubes, which is a necessity for early math skills. I would like to use these cubes with my students in small groups so they can start to understand that 10 ones make 1 ten and how to group units together.
