This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am writing to request materials for a great handwriting curriculum called "Handwriting Without Tears". I am an occupational therapist in a barrier free elementary school. This school serves children in grades K-5 and has both general and special education classes.
Many of the special needs children are learning to write and have a difficult time with letter formation, spacing, sizing, and letter recognition. They have a variety of diagnoses such as Autism, ADD/ADHD, Learning Disabilities, and Cerebral Palsy.
This program uses a multi-sensory and developmental model which is very child friendly. It also includes the use of manipulatives such as wooden pieces and mats to learn 3D letter formation. The slate boards are used for the Wet-Dry-Try method to teach proper letter formation. We need materials for 2 special education classes (12 students in each class) as the foundation for handwriting education. These building blocks, will help to promote improved academics and instill a passion for learning.
The Handwriting Without Tears materials would greatly help our students learn to write and teach them that writing can be fun, not dull and repetitive.
