This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a school-based occupational therapist, I spend my work days addressing students' fine motor and visual motor skills. I support the academic goals of the teacher, primarily self-help and fine motor and/or written expression goals. Many of the students who are initially referred to me or are on my Direct services are in Kindergarten through the second grade. The fine motor manipulatives and supplies I am requesting address one's dexterity and hand and finger strength necessary for maintaining a functional grasp and manipulating a writing utensil.

Writing and pre-writing tasks are typically non-preferred activities for my students.

This means that I need to find innovative treatment sessions to keep my students engaged and motivated to participate. My ultimate goal is for my students to have access to more materials that can address their fine motor and visual motor skills and facilitate carryover into the classroom setting.

I currently oversee students at six Title I elementary schools as well as some homebound students. Each one of my students are unique in their skillset, personalities, and perspectives. It is always a delight to watch how my students take in information and make observations about the world around them as they are learning and growing. They inspire me as they work hard in the classroom and during occupational therapy sessions to overcome obstacles and be just a little bit better than yesterday, each and every day.
