Help me give my students the opportunity to explore working with their hands, planting, excavating, composting, recycling, spreading mulch and taking ownership of their farm.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Rios's classroom raised $576

My Students
My elective classes are fully inclusive, so I teach students of every ability level to interact with the environment in a positive, productive way. This year we are using wood chips generated from our districts tree trimming crew. Instead of dumping them in the dump, we recycle them as mulch, or a ground cover. This prevents weed growth, helps stop compaction from rain and walking on the surface of the soil. Keeps muddy conditions from getting everything dirty, and the wood chips break back down into small particles and become part of our soils again.
We are a group of learners who choose to learn by getting our hands dirty, and be full participants in our farm.
Students who sign up for my classes love being outside and learning about topics such as where our food comes from, how flowers and trees grow and the responsibilities of caring for the farm animals.
For many, the farm provides a place for students to come sit and calm down, clear their minds and spend therapeutic time brushing, walking and caring for our many furry and feathered friends.
My Project
We are going to be spreading a lot of mulch throughout our farm, using the wagons to move the mulch. Composting is also our goal, instead of throwing away leaves, picked weeds, scraps from our garden, we opt to recycle, using composted materials. We also want to grow our own tortoise food, dandelions, and specific grasses.
We set up and maintain our own watering troughs for the animals, we are in need of one more trough for our goats.
We also exercise our goats by walking them. We will use the harnesses to keep up our exercise program. We are supplementing our tortoises with vitamins for healthy living.
