I have a wonderful group of 24 1st graders in my classroom. We have a wide range of reading interest and abilities within our class. The one thing we all have in common is our LOVE of learning.
My students are a hardworking, eager group of boys and girls in first grade.
They each have their own unique personalities, strengths, and backgrounds, and we love being able to learn and grow from one another. We are in a public K-5 school in a middle class Midwest town of 100,000 people.
My Project
My students need more practice with word work. I am asking for 2 play foam kits, magnetic alphabet letters, alphabet stamps, stamp pads, Wikki Stix, and Scrabble tiles for our Word Work block. These resources will be used to amplify our word work block. Each student will rotate through this station, and will utilize these resources for approximately fifteen minutes every school day. They will be creating different letters and words based on the weekly chosen words and each student's ability.
The constructivist theory affirms that hand on opportunities provide a deeper understanding and longer retention of skills.
Students will use the Wikki Stix, foam dough, magnetic letters, and Scrabble tiles to create letters and words based on our chosen, leveled words each week. Working with these hands on activities will enhance their vocabulary, spelling, and understanding of word structure. Reading, writing, and spelling are life-long skill that we will be enriching every day.
