Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are inner city children, of whom 90% live in poverty and single parent homes. All of the students in my class receive free breakfast and lunch. Some students also receive a backpack full of food to go home with on the weekends.

These children face struggles on a daily basis that I could not even imagine, and all I wish to do is provide them with what they need while they are at school so they can feel loved and safe here.

Some students are so talented and I wish to push them further academically so that they can be prepared to go to college. Some students are so far behind academically, and we are not provided the resources to help them at their level, which is why I am asking for your support!

My Project

This project would provide Math supplies that will be utilized throughout the entire year. These materials will provide important hands-on learning that will encourage a deeper understanding of concepts such as adding and subtracting decimals, place value, fractions and multiplying and dividing whole numbers. This opportunity to investigate on their own, using manipulatives, provides an opportunity that cannot be presented in any other way, verbal or written. My students need the interaction with the materials to successfully learn the math concepts. Research shows that learners retain only 5% of material presented through lecture and 30% of which is taught by demonstration. Hands-on participation, on the other hand, can lead to as much as a 75% retention rate.

Many of the Math concepts I present to my students during 5th Grade are very difficult skills to grasp without the aid of manipulatives.

I believe these Math manipulatives will not only provide them with an opportunity to practice skills they so desperately needed for success but also allows them to do it in a way that is fun.
