Hands-on Tools for Virtual Mathematical Thinking

Help me give my students essential tools they will need for developing their mathematical thinking and understanding. They will need hands-on manipulatives like unifix cubes and base ten blocks to model their thinking concretely.

My Students

My First graders are curious, brilliant thinkers. This year I am so lucky to loop with many students from the previous year in Kindergarten. They are creators, artists, and writers.

More than fifty percent of students at my school receive free or reduced lunch, over thirty languages are represented, and many are highly impacted by trauma.

There are gifted and talented learners, several special education programs, and over one-hundred and forty students are English language learners.

My school's highly diverse population brings an incredible wealth of knowledge to the classroom. The pandemic has been a hardship for my school community as it has for all of us. As we prepare to begin remote learning my First graders are gearing up for another unique educational experience in their second year of school. I know that there resilience and joy will shine through the difficulties we face and bring us together as a community.

The students I work with every day inspire me to not only teach every day but also to continue my own lifelong pursuit of learning. They are truly my greatest joy!

My Project

These tools will help my first graders solve and model their mathematical thinking. Concrete manipulatives are developmentally essential for young mathematicians.

Having concrete tools at home during virtual learning is critical to building equitable math instruction for my first graders.

They will use unifix cubes and base ten blocks to model addition, subtraction, and two-digit numbers. They need whiteboards and markers to show how they solve problems and share their ideas with peers. They will use color-coded counters to create combinations and develop their foundational understanding of numbers. These tools are critical in meeting the concrete needs of young mathematicians.
