Hands-On the Human Body is part of a thematic unit that will motivate students to see the relationship and importance of each and every organ and organ system in their bodies and use that knowledge to relate health and nutrition. I teach at a public school of approximately 690 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. My teaching assignment is to teach four classes of General Science which combine Life, Chemistry, and Physical Science concepts.

My students lack motivation and sometimes do not see the relevance of what they are being taught. Many do not see how they can one day make a difference based on the career that they choose. This unit focuses on a topic that can encompass their reality because they need to know how to keep their bodies healthy and help themselves as well as their families see the importance.

In order to make this unit accessible to my students and show the relevance of the knowledge they will gain, connections must be made between the concepts and real life. The Human Body Cluster will make those connections fit and will help my students understand why they need to have healthy habits to keep their bodies in shape and healthy.
