My Project

I work as a Tele Speech and Language Pathologist in the Anchorage School District in Alaska, serving students that attend a Yup'ik Immersion School. Most of my students are of Alaska Native Yup'ik descent, learning in both the native Yup'ik language and English throughout the school day. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many of my student's ability to access the speech and language therapy services they required due to the lack of resources at their homes during the pandemic. Many of my students did not have internet, transportation, or assistance from adults logging into teletherapy sessions during the pandemic, making speech and language sessions challenging to attend during this time. With a lack of socialization during this time, many of my student's social communication skills continued to suffer. There are social-emotional tools in my donors choose project request to increase their ability to meet their social emotional goals. I have added many hands-on activities that are language and phonologically-enhancing for my students to utilize during their tele speech and language sessions at school to help them meet their speech and language goals. The Speech Therapy classroom in the Yup'ik Immersion School has a very limited supply of materials, making it difficult to target all of the range of goals of my students. We are lacking the engaging, hands-on materials that many young students with disabilities enjoy and require to enhance their learning. With this donors choose project, my students will have the ability to use interactive manipulatives to use as positive reinforcement activities and demonstrate their knowledge of language concepts with these materials.
