Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach fourth grade math, science and social studies at a magnet school for gifted and talented students. I have two classes; one is designated gifted (achieved the required score on psychological testing) and one that is designated talented (not classified as gifted but still pretty advanced learners). Our magnet designation means that we only take students at the beginning of the year. Families must fill out an application and go through a lottery process to enter our school.

The misconception in our district is that my students do not have to work hard since they are gifted/advanced learners.

Our students work very hard to maintain their grades. They consistently want to do well. They show me this with their goal setting. "I want a perfect score on the test, because that will show how much I know" and "I want to get a perfect score because I got a perfect last year" are things that my students frequently share with me when we conference about their math work.

My students impress me every day with their abilities. It is an honor to get to work with these bright, wonderful students.

My Project

My school will be doing face to face learning when school starts up this fall. In order to still be able to provide my students with hands on science learning I have to have enough materials for each child to have their own pieces of equipment to use. So that means have enough rulers, pan balances, graduated cylinders, thermometers and magnets for each student to do experiments individually.

Please help me continue their science education with hands on experiments.

If we don't have enough materials for each child to have their own equipment we may not be able to do hands on sciene experiments.
