Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all amazing! I teach students with special needs. Many are on the autism spectrum, but some have other disabilities as well. We work hard, learning academic skills such as reading, writing, and math. We also work on learning social skills such as peer interaction, turn taking, and cooperation. We learn life skills like brushing our teeth, learning how to use money, and basic cleaning skills like sweeping and cleaning tables. Some of my students are non-verbal and are learning alternate forms of communication. Some are English Language learners and are learning language, as well as all the other skills they are taught throughout the day.

My Project

My students love to learn through experience. I would love to be able to show them how things grow through with the Sensory Dome and Root Vue Farm Set. The Butterfly Garden will help teach them about the life cycle of a butterfly. My students are starting to learn new concepts in math and language arts, and would benefit from using the hundreds chart and sequencing stories in their learning.

My students need to be able to learn science through their senses in order to understand it.

When they can watch things grow, use magnets to determine how they work, and interact with manipulatives, they will grasp the concepts better than if we just read about them.

The students all have varying degrees of special needs and it is difficult for them to share with their families what they have learned in school. I am hoping that with more interactive experiences, they will be able to bring their excitement about learning home with them to their families and engage them in learning as well.
