I am a special needs teacher for a K-5, cross categorical population. My students needs range from cerebral palsy to autism, to cognitive impairments to behavioral disabilities. With such a wide variety of needs and levels of education, hands-on learning activities become critical for their success. Additionally, these students are the ones who typically are left behind in the field of social studies and science due to their severe academic delays in core content areas such as reading, math and writing. It is my desire to include these children in science based activities that create opportunities for success and to give each of these students the same content that every other non-disabled child is exposed to on a daily basis in regular classroom environments. Science textbooks are not geared towards this special population, which is why I feel hands-on science activities are critical for these children. Eleven students will participate in this project on a daily basis. Materials needed: Kits for studying insects, butterflies, spiders, ladybugs, flowers. trees, recycling, frogs, wind/air, and the earth.
