Hands-On Science!

My students need glass beakers for experiments, a senses kit for hands-on learning, and cow eyes for dissecting.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Would students rather learn about the eye by listening to a lecture or dissecting an actual eyeball? Would they rather learn about filtration by watching a video or creating it themselves in a lab? These are just some of the hands-on experiences that I would like to provide for my students.

My students are great kids that are interested in careers in the medical field.

The students are required to take extra science classes each year to full-fill the requirements of the program. The school has approximately 2,300 students, most of whom qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. Approximately 74% of the students are Hispanic and 15% are Black. Science can be very difficult for these students since most have not been exposed to scientific processes in their previous educational experiences. My goal is to make the material accessible to them by providing as many hands-on experiences are possible in my classroom.

My Project

If these supplies are provided for my classroom my students will be exposed to at least 3 different hands-on laboratory experiences that otherwise would be difficult to provide. Science classrooms need lab-appropriate glassware to do labs involving liquids and heat. With the beakers my students will be able to perform a filtration lab to see one of the processes of passive transport. With the senses lab the students will be able to stimulate all 5 of their senses in a safe, laboratory setting. With the cow eyes the students will be able to "see" (pun intended) what an eye actually looks like once all of the parts are known.

Hands-on science experiences motivate the students to learn the material and encourage them to attend school on a regular basis.

The students don't want to miss labs because they are so interesting. It's a win-win situation because the students are getting hands-on experiences to learn the concepts and they are staying out of trouble by attending school on a regular basis.
