Hands-On Science to Help My Students Love Engineering
My students need materials to make the science class interesting. They need 3 science kits: Force and Motion, Gravity, and Heat. They also need glue sticks, protractors, pens, a power strip, and pencils. With these materials I can teach hands-on science.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember how it was to learn about speed and acceleration without having a model in front of you? Trying to solve equations that don't make sense just to learn how a pendulum works? I want to bring some hands-on activities to reach all my 49 students.
Do you remember when you were a teenager and didn't know how your future was going to be?
I have 49 students who are familiar with all the drugs available in the community. My students come from different cultural backgrounds. They have learned they can't do math.
95% of my students receive free lunch. 80% of my students are Hispanic, 15% Native Americans and only 5% are Caucasian. They have suffered from discrimination in the past.
Living in a problematic house where the parents have to work three shifts is not helpful to their education. I am a mechanical engineer who decided to help middle school students love and understand math. I love teaching my students!
One example of the students I have is a kid that once had to call the police because he saw his dad beating his mom. Another lovely kid found his mom dead in Alaska. He was adopted by a single mom in our community. These heart breaking stories are the reality of most of my students.
My Project
I am an eighth grade science teacher. I teach physical science to 49 students, and I would like to have some resources for the kids. The materials I want will change the way my students see science.
I know my students can learn Engineering or Math, but it is difficult to make a science class interesting if they cannot "touch it". I have requested materials to make the science class interesting.
We need three science kits: Force and Motion, Gravity, and Heat. These science materials I will help me demonstrate the theorems and concepts I teach. It will also help my students see how things work. When they conduct experiments, kids learn better because they use the eyes and hands, and that makes the learning easier.
I have also requested glue sticks, protractors, pens, a power strip, and pencils. With this materials I can teach hands-on science. I am requesting some classroom supplies like pencils and pens because most of my students don't have money to buy any supplies.
I want to have some science materials in my classroom to encourage the kids to investigate and understand all the physics concepts.
I want my students to love science, and become an Engineer in the future.
Thank you for your support!
