My Students

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of individual student growth and school/district-wide comparative data indicates that students with challenges are the lowest performing group at our elementary school.

Some of my students are from broken homes, in foster care, or struggle for where their next meal will come from.

Additionally, some struggle to concentrate and focus. Yet, all of my students walk into the classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I exude a positive mindset - everyone can learn to the best of their abilities - which translates into their perception of their peers.

Many of the students who struggle do so because they have not been shown that they can succeed. The typical student in my class struggles with the understanding of many subjects. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population especially as they transition to middle school. Teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, reading, writing, social studies and art as well as entertain to keep engagement high.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. The removal of some tables will greatly improve the area students are able to work in.

I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating.

By offering more options with the portable desks, I feel they will only move forward. In addition, with the availability of more space in the tiny classroom, students will have the ability to complete hands-on science experiments. With the supplies I have selected, students will have the capability of working in small groups to complete work in collaborative groups to show their understanding of science and engineering. Currently, we only teach from a text book which does not allow for student creativity or interaction with real world projects or is limited in its ability to provide experiments. The speaker will allow students in the back of the room the ability to hear videos and instruction. The Astrobrights paper will be a great enhancement to their project displays. The pencil sharpener will help my students keep their ideas flowing even in the event of a broken tip!

I have seen how choice and access to hands-on activities can positively affect my students work and hope that the additional options will help us grow.
