This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Let's face it, 6- and 7-year-olds would rather be playing! That's because they are still concrete, hands-on learners. New science vocabulary and abstract topics can be hard to understand. Our science investigations center allows for exploration but I do not have many content rich, hands-on materials.

I have an excellent group of first grade kids!

They love science but many students have little background language and experiences to help them retain new vocabulary and concepts. Nearly half of my students speak another language at home. Three quarters of the kids come from low socioeconomic households. Being first graders, they are all in the process of becoming readers. I have a range of readers from those who are learning letters and sounds to those who are beginning chapter books.

My Project

The science resources and centers needed will be used at the Science Investigations Center so my students can sort, explore and experiment with materials that match the concepts we are currently learning. The Can Do! Science Discovery Kits have several activities for my range of readers to do independently because the instructions are in pictures! When we study the environment, The Feel & Discover Science Bags will bring plants and animals into the classroom. The models will give students the chance to observe living things up close. And the information cards will provide more information about each item. The The Learn to Recycle! Activity Kit helps students identify and sort recyclables so they have the experience with a way they can help the environment. I am excited by how these resources will help my students become independent scientists!

There is a growing concern in the U.S.

about the number of young men and women entering the science and engineering fields. Minority subgroups, in particular, are vastly underrepresented. Developing the inquiry skills in these fields begins from a young age. I want my students to develop that interest. By providing them with hands-on, age appropriate materials, I hope that my six- and seven-year-olds will at least leave my classroom fascinated by science and the world.
