Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach science to four different third grade classes that are grouped homogeneously based on their academic levels and standardized test scores. The school and district that I teach in have again been hit with major budget cuts that have affected the resources that are available in the classroom. This is extremely difficult since my school is a Title I school in which over 95% of our children receive free or reduced lunch. Needless to say, additional resources for the classroom are hard to come by.

The students in my classes are eager to learn new concepts and skills but lack the knowledge and resources to gain them successfully. My students love to come to the board to act like the teacher, love to work in cooperative groups, and most of all love to see their work on display. The resources I am asking for will help me to create meaningful science lessons that the students will love!

Imagine students actively engaged in a lesson about the solar system. Students will be using the pocket chart to demonstrate the the various parts of the solar system. Others will be manipulating the pieces of the pocket chart kit together. These students will be learning without even realizing it; they'll be having fun with hands-on science. The additional resources I am seeking, like the pocket chart stand along with the sentence strips, will allow me to put the students science questions, skills, vocabulary and comments up for display. Doing so will allow the children to not only use this information over and over again but also take pride in their work that is adorning the walls of our science classroom.

I truly believe that the hands-on approach to teaching science leads to hands-on success. I have seen it already with the limited resources my school has--the students love to be engaged and actively involved in the learning process. The materials that you will be providing my students will make it possible for them to thrive in my science classroom.
