Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The second graders in my classroom are eager to learn and are especially excited about Science. They live in Brooklyn, most in large apartment buildings. Many of my students are English language learners and their parents are recent immigrants. Green space and experience with the out of doors are not part of the daily life of my students and their parents do not have the resources to take them beyond the city to experience nature very often.
In second grade we work on life science, but we use textbooks for the majority of the learning activities. My students would jump at the chance to "get their hands dirty" and experience life science close up. I would like to create a Science center for my classroom that includes materials that students can use on their own as well as things to go along with our units of study.
To get my second graders jumping at the chance to "do Science," I would like to have a microscope and slides, and a set of terrarium kits ranging from desert to pond. All of these items will enable the students to learn more about plant and animal life and will enrich our ongoing study of habitats. With actual plants growing in the room, our city classroom will abound with nature. And with a microscope and slides, these budding scientists will be able to use their newly acquired skills to get up close and personal with the natural world. With these resources, my students will understand what we're studying because they will actually be able to see it, touch it, examine it and experience it!
I expect my students' interest in Science and ability to understand the organisms and habitats we are studying to increase greatly.
