Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning science without a visual depiction or a grade level text would be like learning to read without a book or doing math without a pencil. Every year I do a life cycle unit by hatching duck eggs and discussing different concepts. However, the missing resources makes it a great challenge.
I have 24 of the most amazing first graders a teacher could ever ask for!
Each and everyone of them has a treasure within them that shines. They are apart of a public elementary school in Arizona which has many families that come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds. The school hosts grades k(half day)-8th.
We are a kids at hope school and everyday the students say the kids at hope pledge that states "you are talented, smart and capable of success". They are taught that they are each a piece of a puzzle, different and unique but together, the picture is complete!
My students are amazing and deserve the best education and resources available to help them love learning and become life long learners!
My Project
Gaining resources that allow my students to have a full experience that includes hands on materials as well as informative and grade level text will give my current students the ultimate science experience. It will also give each and every student I have for the next 30 years that experience as well. Unlike literacy and other "fads", life cycles is a concrete concept that will not change which allows the materials to be used year after year!
With budget cuts and a district focus on reading and math there is no funding for any additional science related materials unless students are in 8th grade.
Children should not have to wait until they are 12 before they are able to explore the world of science and the endless possibilities that it brings.
