This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My high school students really need hands-on activities! Here at SHS, we are re-building a school from the ground-up as nothing was left behind after Detroit Public Schools resumed control of our school over the state of Michigan. In other words, I have a classroom with... NOTHING in it! I am asking for your help with a physics project and a chemistry/engineering project.
With the laser diffraction sets, my students will collect and analyze data to better understand the true nature of light.
In particular, this set-up will allow them to perform a real physics classics: the Young's double slit experiment. From the interference patterns they will determine wavelengths that are shorter than a micron!
With the electrolysis apparatuses, they will break down water molecules to form hydrogen and oxygen gases. This project will go way beyond the balancing of chemical reactions: I will challenge them to power their hydrogen generators with solar panels and optimize the conditions to make those generators as efficient as possible. Hence, they will build their own renewable hydrogen generators!
