Hands On Science - Building a Model of Earth's Systems

Help me give my students a chance to learn about how the Earthʻs systems interact by building their own model that shows how the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere interact.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school where our entire student population is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. We have a very diverse student body with 14% of our students being English language learners. Each of our students brings a wealth of cultural experiences to the table.

After over a year of learning at home, my students are eager to do some hands on activities!

With the future of in person learning uncertain, we want to maximize our time together with some fun science projects! While our fingers are crossed that we get to continue to learn together at school, we know we will be ready for whatever comes our way this school year!

My Project

We will be learning about Earth's different systems: the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, the geosphere, and the biosphere. As a culminating activity, each student will build a model of how these systems interact.

At the end of our study, each student will have a model of the Earthʻs systems in the form of a terrarium they may take home to share with their family!

Hands on activities like these really help students visualize the core science concepts.

The seed trays, spoons (mini shovels), and hydroponic starter system will be able to be used year after year in the classroom. This is the first time we have done this activity. The growing medium, plants, and jars will be taken home by the students after a student showcase.
