This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Taking care of our earth is something I am passionate about - but for students who have little experience with the wonders of nature - it doesn't seem to matter as much.
Hailing primarily from the government housing projects surrounding our school, my kids live in a concrete world where a trip to the fenced off park is a treat and a trip to the beach, a mere 4 miles from our school (but not accessible by public bus), never happens.
Almost every child at our school qualifies for the CA free lunch - and when money is an issue, day trips and museum trips often get cut from family budgets. My kids have such a limited scope of what mother nature has to offer!
My Project
A field trip across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito’s Bay Area Discovery Museum and then to near by Rodeo Beach for a picnic would allow my students experience The Bay, mountains, and the ocean all in one day! Not only would students experience the various landforms first hand they would be guided through the discovery process by the age appropriate, hands on exhibits (from wave motion to the recycled art studio) at the Discovery Museum.
Our school is not a place where, historically, students have been offered field trips or experiences that grow a love for learning and school.
Your donation can change this. The Discovery Museum will give my students a wonderful, enriching, life experience that will be drawn upon academically for the rest of the year. More over, the love and appreciation they will begin to cultivate for the wondrous nature so close to their city is an experience they can draw on for the rest of their lives.
