I am a new teacher in the Chicago Public schools teaching 20 extremely intelligent fourth graders who come from low-income situations. These children have so much potential and I am inspired by their drive to learn. I want to provide them with as many hands-on captivating activities as possible since most of our day is spent reviewing and practicing for the ISAT test in March. In my student teaching experience I had the opportunity to use the Foss "Science in a Nutshell" kits for electricity with my fourth grade class. They loved the hands-on learning and they could not wait for science everyday! It was such a rewarding experience for me and I hope to replicate this type of enthusiasm now that I have my own classroom. I am requesting a Foss science kit that includes activities essential for fourth graders. I intend to use the kit as part of learning stations in the classroom. Small groups of children will spend 45 minutes conducting an experiment or completing an activity from the kit. This kit can provide year-long learning experiences for my students while teaching them how to problem solve and work in groups. The activities will also reinforce the information they need to pass the ISAT test.
